Stevia Buying Guide | Tips for Buying Stevia | Advice for Acquiring Stevia
Nowadays, there are few sugar substitutes as popular as Stevia. Many have already tried this sweetener, and it’s common for the taste to be perceived negatively upon first use. The bitter aftertaste is particularly responsible for this perception.
However, there are significant quality differences among the many Stevia products on the market.
These differences are most noticeable in terms of price, sweetness intensity, and flavor. Here, you will find the specific reasons for these differences and additional tips for buying Stevia.
The Three Essential Criteria for Buying Stevia
There are three key factors to consider when purchasing Stevia products: sweetness intensity, taste, and yield. High-quality Stevia is characterized by a strong sweetness and excellent taste, often free from the dreaded aftertaste, making it particularly efficient. If you have been disappointed by a Stevia product in the past, it was likely due to inferior quality.
Many Stevia products available in supermarkets and sometimes even in organic stores contain only small amounts of Stevioglycosides (the actual sweetening agents in Stevia) or use low-quality raw materials. Liquid Stevia sweeteners are often mixed with fructose, glucose, or synthetic sweeteners. The same applies to Stevia tablets, which are frequently blended with dextrose, lactose, or vanilla flavor to mask their inferior quality. Stevia sweeteners often contain maltodextrin as well.
Stevia tablets require so-called auxiliary substances to be formable and dissolve in liquids. These tablets contain a maximum of 25% Stevia. There are no Stevia tablets that are 100% Stevia. Internet offers claiming Stevia tablets with 95% or 97% Stevia are often dubious. Therefore, always pay close attention to the ingredient list.
Compare the individual products carefully before purchasing!
These characteristics define a high-quality Stevia product:
1. Purity Level
For a premium quality Stevia product, Stevioglycosides (Stevia) with a purity of at least 95% are necessary. Inferior additives or fillers should not be present.
2. Rebaudioside A Content
Rebaudioside A, also known as “Reb-A,” is the sweetest component of the Stevia leaf. A good product should have a Rebaudioside A content of at least 60% to 98%.
Only if these criteria are met can the taste of Stevia be comparable to that of regular sugar. Many Stevia products available in supermarkets, such as liquid sweeteners, sweetener tablets, or powdered sweeteners, often have only a low Stevia content and frequently contain additives like flavors, fructose, dextrose, and lactose.

Why You Should Choose Stevia:
Other synthetic sweeteners like Acesulfame, Advantame, Aspartame, Cyclamate, Neohesperidin, Neotame, Saccharin, Sucralose, and Thaumatin are unnatural, often suboptimal in taste, and suspected to be carcinogenic. Moreover, they frequently lead to cravings and are therefore unsuitable for diets.
Natural alternatives such as agave syrup, palm sugar, honey, rice syrup, malt sugar, and xylitol can cause digestive issues and often have similar calorie counts to regular table sugar.
